Manufacturing Informed Design API On Autodesk Forge

Today, building design decisions are not informed by what can be made. Construction processes are iterative, manual, slow, and reactive, with high risk and uncertainty. Data and tools are disconnected and don’t allow processes to work at scale. In this session, we'll go over our Manufacturing Informed Design project. We’ll examine how it brings together our portfolio to inform the design process as early as possible, and we’ll look at how the Autodesk Forge API we’re developing for this will enable our customers and partners to extend our solution. The Manufacturing Informed Design API will be a simple way for customers to 1) publish product templates from Inventor software into Autodesk Construction Cloud or Fusion Team, 2) discover those product templates via the API or Revit, and 3) customize and insert variants from a simple API. We’ll also cover how we’re extending the Autodesk Forge Viewer for simple low- or no-code configuration workflows.

Empowering Forge with Power BI
In the big data and artificial intelligence era, Saipem's new business model considers innovation an integral part of corporate culture. Having a large amount of information available, and above all being able to count on a great calculation capacity that can improve decision speed and managing complexity, is one of the principles that will make digital and big data analysis increasingly essential in the present and the future. In construction departments, talking about data means a clash with the complexity of data usability and management. This class will showcase how Forge enabled Saipem to aggregate big data from different sources (SmartPlant 3D, Tekla Structures, Oracle, Navisworks software) to analyze them (Microsoft Power BI) and to get an updated data set of information applying a full BIM (Building Information Modeling) approach. This class will describe the steps toward getting Power BI dashboard directly in Forge, approaching the system architecture necessary for this integration.

IoT Manufacturing Demo: Optimizing CNC Toolpaths Using Fusion 360 and Forge
In this demo, we will walk through a simplified example of capturing real-time manufacturing data (cutting temperatures) from a hobby-class computer numerical control (CNC) router as it machines aluminum, visualizing that data on the visual model of the part being manufactured. Cutting tool and workpiece temperatures are direct indications of cutting efficiency and tool health. Mapping temperatures can help validate and suggest adjustments to feeds, speeds, and depth of cut to achieve the nominal chip load. While this is far from an industrial solution, this demo will show the power of IoT manufacturing within a simplified context to explore the utility and promise of cloud-based manufacturing solutions, built with Forge.

Using Design Automation for Revit for Displaying RFAs in the Forge Viewer
There are a variety of formats that the Forge viewer supports. The Model Derivative API enables translation of more than 60 different types of source file formats. Yet, there is one format ubiquitous in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry that does not find its place in the list—RFA. There could be various ways to visualize RFA files in the viewer; the most common is: conversion to a format that's supported by Forge, though it's not the fastest or most effective. In this class, we'll look at a workflow that can help developers optimize up to 90% of their Forge credits usage. Accomplishing this requires building a headless Revit plug-in using the Revit API, preparing it for the Design Automation API, processing the outputs using the Model Derivative API, and finally rendering individual Revit families in the viewer. We'll also look at how we can give end users the ability to switch between multiple family types, as well as access the Instance and Type parameters directly in the Forge Viewer.

Sales Engineering Automation Using Forge, Fusion Lifecycle, and Vault
Manufacturing companies are under increasing pressure to provide unique products to their customers, while at the same time improving their overall efficiency. In this session, we will explore how a configurator technology built on Forge, in conjunction with Fusion Lifecycle software and Vault software, provides a seamless and integrated solution to achieve increased sales, reduced engineering cycle times, and ultimately greater efficiency. Using only a web browser, sales staff or even prospective customers can configure a product to their unique requirements and receive immediate visual feedback and a professional quotation. When they are ready to order, information will flow seamlessly to both Fusion Lifecycle and Vault. Additional Vault customization will provide additional downstream data, such as DXF files—all automated using Vault software's lifecycle engine. This session is certain to open your eyes to excellent processes for optimal efficiency, integration, and automation.

Shorten Lead Times by Integrating Design Automation in Downstream Processes
More and more companies are moving to a configure-to-order approach, making their products modular and configurable. Where in the past each customer order was designed separately, with a product configurator, every order is compiled from existing modules. The automated output of the configured product (quote, visuals, Bill of Materials) can be used in the downstream processes. This means a significant reduction in the turnaround time for lengthy processes such as quoting, planning, and engineering. The Forge platform offers with the Design Automation API for Inventor software a technology to build a web-based configurator, automating BOM, pricing, and 3D-visualization delivery. Besides that, Fusion Lifecycle software offers the perfect platform for managing the business-wide workflows, like the management of downstream engineering, sales, and change processes. Automate Boring Stuff in Autodesk Using RPA (Robotic Process Automation)
RPA (robotic process automation) is growing fast. RPA is mimicking the repetitive human activities with software robots. Almost 25-30% of every project has repetitive tasks that are done by engineers, designers, and modelers, including data copying from Microsoft Excel to a software, headers and footers for drawings, drawing info extraction, conversions, analysis, and so on. For some of these activities we use plug-ins, programs like Dynamo software, coding like VBA, .NET, and Forge. But these are specific to each software and work for a specific task. In this session, I'm going to introduce an innovative solution using RPA that works with most Autodesk software, including AutoCAD software, Civil 3D software, Revit software, and Navisworks software. You will see RPA in action preparing inputs, transferring data between different sources, performing analysis, extracting data, filing data, generating reports, and much more, aiming to automate your business processes. A Revit Developer’s Journey from Desktop to the Cloud
Prefabrication and automation in offsite wood construction requires highly detailed building models while maintaining performance. This puts constraints on both the model creation phase, as well as the output phase. The extracted data, as well as the fabrication process automation data needs to be accessible by all stakeholders - the builders, prefabricators and project managers. By combining Autodesk products and APIs, hsbcad has developed vastly improved workflows for its customers and their stakeholders. This class describes the process that hsbcad - as an AutoCAD, and Revit plugin development company - has gone through in order to become a web development company. We will describe the innovation that Autodesk Forge has triggered at hsbcad; and our evolution from using the Forge Viewer with BIM360 integration, to a full featured web application that uses the Design Automation API for Revit to digest Revit models and link them up with existing hsbcad desktop and cloud functionality.

How to Persist: Application Data from Revit into the Cloud—Focus on Prefabrication
Prefabrication and automation in offsite construction requires building models to be rich in data. The generation of construction drawings, creation of a bill of materials and the application of fabricated information is required in the model. In wood construction for example, it requires modeling of accurate processing (precutting) and assembly of prefabricated items including tooling (e.g. nailing and milling operations). All this, including derived data in the form of CNC files, shop drawings, etc., needs to be accessible by all stakeholders - the builders, prefabricators and project managers. By combining Autodesk products and APIs, hsbcad has developed improved workflows to create and modify rich model content. Revit content is able to enrich cloud based BIM that drives CNC equipment and improves on site processes.
